Q: What programmer do I need to flash this board?
You need a CP2102 or CH340 USB-to-TTL adapter (5-pin). The board has no built-in USB port. Connect IO0 to GND before powering on to enter flash mode, then disconnect and reset to run firmware.
Q: Does it support face recognition out of the box?
Yes. When using Arduino IDE with the Espressif ESP32 board package, the built-in CameraWebServer example includes face detection and face recognition demos powered by ESP-WHO.
Q: What is the difference between this and a standard ESP32 board?
This board includes an OV2640 2MP camera module and 4MB PSRAM for image buffering — features not found on standard ESP32 dev boards. It is specifically designed for vision and camera applications.
Q: Can I save images to a memory card?
Yes. The board has a microSD (TF card) slot. Note that when the SD card is active, several GPIO pins are occupied by the SPI interface, reducing available I/O.
Q: Is it compatible with Arduino IDE?
Yes. Install the Espressif ESP32 board package in Arduino IDE (v1.8+ or v2.x) and select AI-Thinker ESP32-CAM as the board. Example sketches for streaming and face recognition are included.
